DON DORSEY
Don Dorsey holds the unique distinction of being the longest running continuously contracted consultant in the history of the Walt Disney Company. Recruited onto the Disney team in 1975 by Disney Legend Jack Wagner to help produce showtapes for all of Disneyland and Walt Disney World’s parades and stage productions, Don’s responsibilities soon expanded to include parade audio coordinator, control system designer, performer, music arranger, and ultimately nighttime spectacular show designer and director. Don has been involved with projects at every Disney theme park worldwide but is best known for his significant roles in three of the company’s longest running productions: The Main Street Electrical Parade, Fantasmic! at Disneyland, and Reflections of Earth at Epcot.
RANDAL (RANDY) THORNTON
For over 32 years Randy Thornton has worked at Walt Disney Records producing and developing over 350 product and programs for children and families. During that time his work has received numerous Parent’s Choice Awards, an ABA award, 10 Gold Records, 4 Platinum Records and 6 Grammy nominations, winning the Grammy in 1994 for The Lion King Read Along. In addition to his work in the Spoken Word field, Randy has spent the last 30 years restoring the classic Disney soundtracks. Often called upon by fan groups and Disney historians, Randy lectures about his restoration projects as well as Disney music history.
Most recently Randy has produced several titles for Walt Disney Records “The Legacy Collection” – Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp,The Aristocats, Robin Hood, Disneyland, and Mary Poppins. Six of those titles include The Lost Chords. They feature songs created for a film but which never made it into the final version and were lost for decades. Along with original demos, new versions were orchestrated and recorded in a way the original composers may have envisioned them.
Over the years Randy has compiled and restored historical box sets, including Annette: A Musical Reunion with America’s Girl-Next-Door, 75 Years of Music and Memories, the 4-disc Disney Classics (Modern Classics, Timeless Classics, Theme ParkClassics, Television Classics) and the 5-disc Walt Disney and the 1964 World’s Fair(2009).
In 2005 Randy produced the largest box set in the history of Walt Disney Records – the 6-CD A Musical History of Disneyland– which featured nearly 8 hours of new and classic, restored and remastered recordings from Disneyland park. This painstakingly thorough audio collection took Randy over one year to compile and restore, providing the listener with the most comprehensive collection of music and ambient sounds from Disneyland in honor of its 50thAnniversary.
In 2002, Randy completed what he believes to be his most important restoration, Walt – The Peter Martin Interview. In this interview (which lasts nearly 20 hours), Walt himself tells his life story. Initially, Randy was asked to restore the interview for use in Diane Disney Miller’s film Walt: The Man Behind the Myth. Now, the newly restored interview is available for researchers in The Walt Disney Archives.
Randy is now Supervising Producer and Music Historian for the Disney Music Group.
